Tour 9 - Between the sky and the lake: Domaso and Gera Lario

Arrival at Domaso, an ancient fishing village with the enchanting shape of an amphitheatre, which is a landingplace for the lovers of water sports, windsurf, trekking, mountaineering as well as fishing. You should visit the church of S. Bartolomeo, with important frescos inside, such as a prestigious painting of Giulio Cesare Procaccini, the Madonna col Bambino and Ss. Pietro e Paolo (approx. 1600). You can also find the tomb of the Governor of the Fuentes Fort.
You continue to Gera Lario, another landingplace for the lovers of lake sports, where we suggest to visit the church of S.Vincenzo, of romanesque origin (XIIIth century). In this church the roman and early Christian ruins coexist with the rich decoration of the XVIth century placing this church among the most important churches of the Upper Lario.
Arrival at the small village of Trezzone, with its ancient structure of stone houses, high stairs and underground passages. Then, a short visit to the church of S. Maria delle Grazie, probably of medioeval origin, with the two paintings of the nativity of Maria and the Annunciazione, both attributed to Caracciolo da Vercana.
Through a muletrack completely plunged in the nature, you arrive at Vercana, at the beginning of the slopes of the Pizzo Sasso Canale, with sublime views of the lake, Pian di Spagna, Valtellina and Legnone. Then visit of the church of S. Salvatore, built in 1464 but completely renovated between 1600 and 1700. As a matter of fact this church is one of the richest in baroque decoration in the Lario area.
This excursion continues to Montemezzo, with the visit of the church dedicated to S. Martino and located in a beautiful panoramic position. This church preserves the painting of the Crucifixion, one of the main paintings of this area wich can be related to Bernardino Luini in Santa Maria degli Angeli in Lugano and to Fermo Stella in the church of S. Lorenzo in Teglio.
Going down to Gera Lario, through an ancient mule track, you reach the S. Miro sanctuary.
